GIGAOM Reports : The influence of Apple’s iPad on mobile computing is made fairly obvious by the huge numbers of competitor products that we’ve seen from just about every mobile and computer company under the sun, but a new report from Deutsche Bank makes it even more apparent. Analyst Chris Whitmore reviewed notebook sales in recent years, up to the second quarter of 2011, and found that, when included, the iPad has boosted Apple beyond all laptop makers.

Ipads Used As Restaurant Menus

CultOfMac Reports : A trendy Atlanta eatery is the latest to adopt a growing hospitality industry trend: using iPads as interactive menus.
Guests at the Do Restaurant at The View make their selections on Apple’s culture-changing tablet, which are then relayed to iPads in the kitchen. Waiters of the human variety come in only to bring orders to the tables.
Restauranteurs Christian and Nacasha Ruffin worked with a certified Apple programmer to custom design their ordering system, since what they were looking for wasn’t previously available, they tell CNN.

That feature's now accessible through iCloud.com, the Web front end for Apple's upcoming cloud service, which went live to developers earlier this week

Apple To Discontinue Magic Mouse in Favor of Magic Trackpad?

Cult of Mac reports that Apple is planning to discontinue its multi-touch Magic Mouse in the relatively near future, pushing users to adopt the Magic Trackpad in order to make full use of the new gestures included in OS X Lion. According to the source, who is apparently in Apple's retail arm, Apple is not replenishing inventories of the Magic Mouse at its stores as they run low.

31) Apple 27-inch Cinema display to go on sale this week?

LED display tipped to be with us in the very near future
Apple could be preparing to ship its 27-inch Cinema display after details were spotted on its online store.

Announced along with the company's new Mac Pro, iMac and Magic Trackpad back in July, configuration pages on the Apple online store which have since been taken down, had been updated with information regarding the new monitor.

The product description stated, "Supersize your view with the stunning 27-inch Apple LED Cinema Display. It offers an incredible 2560-by-1440 resolution for viewing high-definition (HD) content with room to spare.”

It goes on to mention LED backlighting, a Mini DisplayPort cable, a built-in iSight camera, and a 49-speaker watt system amongst the notable new features.

The 27-inch Cinema display could be available as soon as this week, but we'll keep you posted as soon as it pops back up on the Apple online store.

29) Parallels Desktop 6: Windows on the Mac

Parallels Desktop 6 (PD6) has been announced for the Mac, and offers performance gains over the previous version. Parallels provides virtual machine capability on the Mac designed to allow the installation and operation of alternate operating systems such as Windows. The developer claims that Windows boots 41 percent faster than before, and that intensive graphic applications show a similar performance boost.

The ability to run Mac and Windows programs side-by-side is useful for some folks, and PD6 is designed to make that experience very fluid. The Windows desktop in PD6 can be used in several ways: a resizable window, run in full-screen mode that toggles between Windows and OS X, or run in the Coherence mode which has Windows programs appearing on the Mac desktop like native apps. Professionals using Windows at work and OS X at home can access files and programs on the Mac once Parallels is installed. I made a video of the previous version of Parallels to demonstrate how well it makes Windows and OS X play together.

The new version will be available for purchase on Sept. 14(TODAY) for $79.99, with upgrade pricing of $49.99 for existing Parallels owners. Customers who have purchased the previous version recently may qualify for a free upgrade.

23) The Apple Peel 520 is Coming to the United States

The Apple iPhone is a transformative mobile device that packs the power to run millions of applications, play games, listen to music, and more into a powerful smartphone. Just about the only thing the iPhone can’t do is be purchased affordably. Thanks to GoSolarUSA, however, there is an alternative!

Apple’s iPod Touch is a powerful media player and pocket PC that can do everything an iPhone can do except place calls and text messages—until now. The Apple Peel 520 is a radical new third-party device that adds voice and text messaging capabilities to the iPod Touch for a fraction of the cost of an iPhone! This startling new technology is the creation of 22-year-old Chinese programmer Pan Yong. The Apple Peel 520 acts as a protective skin that slips over the iPod Touch’s case and includes a battery, dock connector and SIM card. Once the proper software is installed, the Apple Peel 520 adds the ability to make voice calls and text messages using any version of the iPod Touch. When fully charged, the Apple Peel’s 800mAh battery offers nearly five hours of talk time and 120 hours of standby use.

Previously, this technology was available only on the Chinese black market. GoSolarUSA believes that the power of connectivity should be affordable for all. That’s why we’ve brought the Apple Peel 520 to the United States. If you’re unwilling or unable to spend $400 or more to upgrade to an iPhone 4, unlock your iPod Touch’s potential with the Apple Peel—then call your friends to spread the word!

21) Overheating iPod Fire Scare Delays Tokyo Subway Train

The train was stopped in western Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward for eight minutes — quite a long time for Tokyo’s busy train schedule — at around 8:20 a.m. local time. “When a member of staff went to investigate inside the train, a passenger came over showing him that the iPod she was listening to had burst apart,” the spokesman of the rail line operator Tokyu Corp told Reuters. No injuries were reported.

Apple has declined to comment. The debacle may only worsen Apple’s public image in Japan, which has been marred somewhat by a series of incidents in recent years, involving first-generation Nanos overheating and in some cases producing fire or sparks. The Japanese trade ministry now claims that there have been about 60 such cases, including four that caused minor burns; the number is up from a recent tally of 34.

Apple has described the problem as rare, and attributable to a single battery supplier. At the same time, though, the company recently began a replacement program, ordered by the Japanese government. Prior to formal demands, Apple Japan is said to have been unresponsive to pressure to take market steps, such as issuing warnings or a recall. At any rate, it isn’t good news for Apple, considering the recent claims that reported iPhone 4 bursting into flames (with pics to prove)!

17) Ultra Thin iPhone 5 Concept Design – Fake?

We all know that Apple has just released iPhone 4G in last July, but we have already found the next iPhone version named iPhone 5 that promises to come with Ultra Thin design. Folks at HandyFlash have posted pictures of the next generation iPhone that will be so thin that it will make your handkerchief feel jealous! But if we look closer, this Ultra Thin iPhone 5 Concept Design looks too good (thin) to be true and it leaves us wondering – is this for real or fake?

A giant display with an ultra-thin body, this device is probably every iPhone owner’s wet dream. Along with the concept, HandyFlash notes that the next device could sport a 100Mbps radio within, come in 32GB and 64GB renditions, and carry an updated retina display. But unfortunately, if you look closely the iPhone 5 design is showing iOS 2. If anything was as serious as even an early concept, it would AT LEAST be showing iOS 3! If you would ask us about the design, is it great looking? Hell, Yeah. But is it possible to design this with the current technology? Unfortunately, No! When it comes to any li-io/li-po battery powered devices, THIN = BAD. Period. Current mobile battery technology just aren’t efficient and powerful enough to be physically scaled down to those levels of slimness.

This kind of slimness will ONLY be possible if they discover how to deal with the battery. A battery so slim that can fit on the above design will innovate the whole tech world. So it certainly is a cool concept but not possible with the current technology. Maybe Apple will need to surprise us just like when they introduced the first ever iPod!

As the bottom line, this is a nice exercise in rendering but even as a concept it’s far too impractical. It simply lacks the thickness needed for plugging in the dock connector or headphones. Even if you went completely wireless for sync & sound, the battery life would last about the duration of a sneeze. Not to mention that if it were constructed of anything less than carbon fiber or Titanium, it would snap in half in your pocket.

At any rate, we have to admit that Ultra Thin iPhone 5 Design is a great concept and we will hope that Apple will (again) do some magic to prove that it’s not fake! What do you think?
